Export to a GEDCOM file

You can share your family history data with family and friends by  creating a GEDCOM file. These files are text files that can be sent as e-mail attachments, or copied to flash drives etc.

To create a GEDCOM file of your entire database, select the ‘File -> Export to a GEDCOM file’ option on the main menu.

A Save sheet will open to allow you to name the GEDCOM file and select a location where the file will be written.

When you click the ‘Save’ button, a sheet will appear that lets you select output options. You can select one of three different character encodings for the GEDCOM file.

UTF-8 (the default selection) is a widely used encoding which supports all international and special characters.

UTF-16 is also a widely used encoding. If you know that the person you are sending your data uses UTF-16 you can select this option.

ANSI supports most latin languages and some special characters. Systems that require USASCII or ANSI text files will accept your data in this encoding

The other selectable option has to do with multimedia files that are referenced by your database. If you wish to share the multimedia files as well as the database, you can select the ‘Copy multimedia files to folder’ option.

A new folder will be created, and the files containing your images, photos, documents, pdf files etc. will be copied to the new folder.

This folder will have the name ‘XXXXX multimedia’ where ‘XXXXX’ is the name you selected for your GEDCOM file. The folder will be created in the same location as the one you selected for your GEDCOM file.

After selecting the desired options, click the ‘OK’ button. The GEDCOM file will be created and a progress indicator will be shown.

Note: If you selected the option to copy multimedia files, and one or more of the files is not found at the location referenced in your database, you will see this message:
