The File menu

 

When you click ‘File’ on the main menu, the File drop down menu appears.

The ‘New’ menu item - lets you create a new database from scratch.

The ‘Open’ menu item - shows an Open File panel which lets you navigate to, and open, your database(s).

The ‘Open Recent’ menu item - let’s you open recently viewed databases

The ‘Close’ menu item - closes the current tree being viewed

The ‘Save’ menu item - saves any changes made to the current database

Note: Branches automatically saves changes after operations. You do not need to save changes manually.

The ‘Save As...’ menu item - Will save a copy of the current database in the location, and with the name you choose.

The ‘Backup database’ menu item - makes a copy of the current database in the selected location with a file extension of .bak

The ‘Restore database’ menu item - let’s you select a backup copy of a database (with a file extension of .bak) and replace the current database with the backup.

The ‘Rename database’ menu item - let’s you change the name of a database

The ‘Delete database’ menu item - let’s you permanently delete a database

The ‘Renumber database’ menu item - re-assigns record identification numbers (RINs) to all individuals in your database starting with the current root person

The ‘Import a GEDCOM file’ menu item - lets you load your family history information from another program or data source

The ‘Export to a GEDCOM file’ menu item - let’s you create a GEDCOM file of your entire database to share with others

The ‘Export selected to a GEDCOM file’ menu item - let’s you create a GEDCOM file from a selected portion of the current tree

The ‘Import a Branches database’ menu item - let’s you import information from a second Branches database into the currently open database.

The ‘Prune selected and export remaining individuals’ menu item - let’s you create a new Branches database from the current tree, after removing all individuals that have been selected

The ‘Database information’ menu item - gives you information about the current database, such as number of individuals, families, events, source citations, etc.

The ‘Print reports’ menu item - opens the Print reports dialog box
